Founded on a love, passion and natural connection with dogs, the Kelford approach to canine behaviour utilises the principles of both canine and human psychology to achieve the ultimate partnership.
The Kelford techniques are built on a lifetime of living and working with dogs, dedication to our extensive research and an unwavering belief in the power of the human/canine relationship. It is this knowledge and experience that has led to our success and continues to motivate us to change dogs lives and the life you live with them.
The name Kelford is derived from the names of the founders, husband and wife team Karen Kelly and David Ford. David inspired and supported Kelly in her lifetime of a love for dogs and although not a trainer, he was at the very core of Kelford. Their son, Lyndon, is a senior trainer at Kelford.
Kelly, our principal behaviourist and therapist and founder of Kelford combined her interest and education in psychology with an innate passion for all things canine. Her unique experiences, education and intuition led her to recognising the power of the human connection to our canine companions and that achieving the ultimate relationship was based on mutual respect and understanding. It was this core principle that Kelly built her unique and highly successful dog training techniques around. Kelly’s enthusiasm has proven to be as inheritable as it is contagious, with her son, Lyndon demonstrating a great passion and aptitude for handling from a very young age, managing and working dogs as a child. Now an adult with over 30 years of experience, Lyndon’s connection and a lifetime of understanding man’s best friend is second to none, and has seen him transform the lives of canines and owners all over the world.
Informed by our values of communication, consistency, confidentiality and respect, our unique techniques are designed to accommodate the natural abilities and character of the owner, the breed characteristics of the dog, the effect of human input to date and the owners’ expectations. Here at Kelford we believe in the individual, which is why we design bespoke training programmes that ensure the ultimate level of fulfilment is attained for dog and owner.
Principal Trainer / HPR Specialist / Canine Therapist
Kelly studied human psychology and wellbeing in the UK & Paris and combined this with studies and experience in canine psychology. This paved the way to her realization of the importance and benefits of reaching the perfect balance within the canine/human relationship.
Kelly has dedicated her life to all that is canine. She has been training dogs since the age of 11, when she wrote to Blue Peter requesting that Crufts be shown on television, to enable other children to see the excitement of the canine world and what achievements could be made with the family dog. Kelly still has the letter and Badge from the Blue Peter team with acceptance of her suggestion.
By her teens she was already being taught by some of the famous names of the dog world in disciplines, such as specialist grooming, nutrition, showing, obedience, gundog training, behaviour, and she even attended autopsies to understand as much as possible about canine medicine.
It was not long before Kelly was being televised giving her ever popular demonstrations with her dogs at Crufts Earls Court, Wembley and the NEC Birmingham. Her experience and understanding of the dog as a loyal companion, or as a worker.
Kelly principally concentrates on training the owner to train the dog, correction of problem dogs, breed recognition and selection, training specialist dogs, and training dogs to suit the individual lifestyle.
Kelly’s unique & highly successful training methods were first introduced in 1978. Kelly frequently demonstrated and held training clinics at major Game fairs over many years. Principal Speaker at Seminars, Managing Discover Dogs/ judging the Breed Parade on behalf of Countryman Fairs, and appeared many times at Crufts, as well as her being Principal Trainer/ Canine Behaviourist at Kelford Dog Training Centre UK.
Kelly has been sponsored over many years by a number of international companies such as Proctor & Gamble’s Eukanuba, Arden Grange, Nissan and Autarky. All of which approached her recognizing the benefits of her association with these major companies & knowing that her expertise is second to none.
Owning Boarding / Breeding Kennels, Grooming Parlors, Training Schools, Gun & Country Clothing Stores, Therapy Clinics for Humans, and the ever popular Dog Hotel & HPR Training Centre, judging multiple breeds, running a wildfowl shoot in Cambridgeshire with her husband, along with studying both human & canine psychology, carrying out an intense study which involved living with a pack of dogs, carrying out a number of recognized studies over the years (such as genetic rage, fading puppy syndrome, canine epilepsy) have all contributed to Kelly becoming the most sought after Trainer/ Behaviourist in the UK.
Her knowledge & experience in all that is canine related is endless. Kelly has an intuitive ability to understand the needs of the dog, owner, and consequences of actions. She anticipates & resolves problems whilst taking into account significance of decisions made by the owner prior to assessment.
By prioritizing effectively, target levels are reached rapidly, whilst dog and handler enjoy the experience of training. All methods are focused on educating the mind of the dog, in order to reach total equilibrium. The balance of understanding and respect between the two, being the key to the ultimate in canine & human co-habitation.
Breed Specialist / Senior Trainer / Canine Behaviourist
Lyndon has been handling and training dogs from when he could first stand and hold a lead. He was born at a time when we at Kelford were studying genetic rage in Cocker Spaniels, with 48 case studies on the premises. It was not long before his incredible connection and ability to intuitively understand and communicate with canines became apparent. As he grew, so did his ability to channel dogs in to willingly following his direction.
Lyndon and his unusual ability to communicate with dogs was broadcast by the BBC. Lyndon has grown up in a very rural/ canine environment and has been taking his dogs out working on shoots since before he was old enough to fire a shotgun.
Lyndon has demonstrated obedience around the world without the lure of treats, taking stage numerous times at Crufts, and has successfully demonstrated at many of the principal Game Fairs.
Lyndon educates clients from around the world and successfully works to rebalance the Canine/human relationship the Kelford way. Lyndon specializes in training clients in their home environments and often works with celebrities training their canine companions.
“This is not simply a job for me, it is a lifestyle and my passion. I have been working with dogs all of my life and have been training and demonstrating with dogs across the world since I was a child. That’s 30+ years of studying canines and living with a pack of canines.
Although I studied law at university, I quickly realized that I did not want to be stuck in an office for my career, as my passion is being outside in the fresh air with my canine companions.
I train companion dogs, gundogs, therapy dogs, medical assistance dogs and specialise in HPRs.
I’m honestly shocked at the way in which dog training and dog ownership in general is heading. The issue is that there is so much misinformation out there, it is very confusing for the new dog owner. Quality of training is a major factor, most of my clients have read most popular dog books, watched all the TV programmes and training videos. They arrive with bags of training accessories, purchased with the assurance it was needed by their last trainer. They arrive confused, disheartened and with very unruly dogs.
Pockets full of smelly treats and even smellier treats for when the dog ignores the treat and still chases a squirrel, clickers, toys, squeakies, tug toys, the list is endless.
Everything purchased by the pet owner to alleviate guilt and try and connect with their canine by any means possible.
It isn’t that the average dog owner hasn’t tried to research the topic or attempted to train their dogs, it is the fact that there is so much nonsense extolled by inexperienced pet owners calling themselves trainers and behaviourists.
As there is no governing body for dog training, it is a free for all.
Now that dog training has been diluted to a bag of treats and anyone with the bag is a trainer, there is a dog crisis in the UK and in other countries.
Rescue centres overflow, canines are more ‘anxious’, ‘nervous’, ‘aggressive’ than ever before, dogs prescribed anxiety medications in an attempt to alleviate negative behaviours, news reports abound of innocent people mauled to death, dogs are being killed daily in parks and fields, livestock torn apart, owners scared of their own dogs in their homes.
It’s about time we stop and reconsider our ideas of dog ownership and training methods.
We are doing man’s best friend a dis service every time we wave a treat under its nose. Most trainers today fail to recognise any differences between the breeds and have a one size fits all policy for training. It is heartbreaking to see as so many canines are simply misunderstood.
I have dedicated my life to correcting the mistakes made with “man’s best friend” and with every successful rebalancing of a bad-mannered canine, I receive such immense satisfaction that both dog and owner are going to have a wonderful future together.”
